ONE of Swindon’s biggest fundraisers has been postponed until next year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 31st Swindon Charity Ball would have been held at the Marriott on May 16 with a Putting on the Ritz theme.

But government guidelines forced organisers to delay it until almost exactly a year on from its original date.

All of the tables for the event had already been booked - and these bookings will be kept until next year if guests are happy to let their deposits be retained.

It is hoped that the Rotary Club of Swindon’s event will bring to the total raised for good causes by the annual gala to more than £1 million when it is eventually held on May 15 2021.

Chairman Rob Gillespie said: “Due to the latest government directives that have recently been announced concerning the coronavirus pandemic, and to ensure the health and safety of you, our guests, the Swindon Charity Ball committee has made the appropriate decision to postpone the ball.

“I know that you will appreciate that this decision has not been taken lightly. We will endeavour to ensure that the 2021 ball continues to raise funds for our chosen charities The Open Door Centre and Swindon Night Shelter, with as much vigour and support as in previous in years.

“We are aware that many of our guests have already paid their deposits to attend the ball and we would kindly ask that if you are prepared to allow this money to be held on your behalf, this is retained for the 2021 ball.

“All such monies are held within an escrow account. However, we are aware that this may not be possible for everyone and, if you prefer to be refunded, please contact us and we will have this processed and arrange for a transfer back to you.

“Once again, thank you for your continued support of The Swindon Charity Ball. We very much look forward to welcoming you to this cherished event next year.

“In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting us - and please look after yourselves.”

Last year the ball raised £16,800 for good causes including the Harbour Project, STEP, Hreod Burna Urban Forest, Wiltshire Search & Rescue, Friends of TWIGS, Big Breakfast Plus, the 12th Swindon Scout Group and Swindon & District Samaritans.

Backed by Newsquest Media Group, the Adver’s parent company, the charity ball has established itself as one of the biggest fundraisers in the county.

Over the last three decades, the ball has supported more than 50 organisations.
