The Liberal Democrats has said that central government should pay householders' council tax bills for the next three months.

The party says it would give a break to people who have lost their jobs, taken a pay cut or been put on furlough during the coronavirus pandemic.

The money from government would mean that borough council's could still continue providing essential work.

Here's what you said on Facebook:

Clare Dowell: "Think this also goes for these fines police are giving people for not abiding by the rules. How are they going to pay £30 fines when they are not working.

"In a court, the law would be on the unemployed persons side so it's not worth the fine it's written on."

Steve Watts: "I like the way the assumption is that it’s only a small budget needed because it’s only Swindon.

"What about the rest of England and Wales? Going on a three month reprieve for the entire nation who pay council tax (approx 24.5million homes) going on the Lib Dem assumption of around £450 per household, that’s 1.1billion of funding from government.

"Where is that money supposed to magically come from? And if they supply it, who’s prepared to implement austerity or higher taxes in the future to pay it back?"

Sarah Lewis: "I agree if you've not got work because of the virus and struggling to get help on the benefits line because of getting hold of them. You can't pay with fresh air."

Nads Mitchell: "Why? We are all either still in work or receiving 80 per cent of our previous pay.

"Anyone who isn't and isn't receiving help should either be entitled to Universal Credit and council tax benefit or have private means.

"If we all stop paying, how do the council pay the staff which includes teachers and bin men? More borrowing from central government? Who do you think is going to pay that back in the end."

Christine Ings: "It should be if you can pay then pay, otherwise you should be able to have a break from it until you can pay."

Mikey Bailey: "We still need our binmen/women and all these basic things to carry on.

"Essential elements of the council tax breakdown can be excluded and people can be given a rebate on it or a revised council tax plan for financial year 20-21."

Krystyna Kulesza: "I'll gladly pay for the police and garbage collection."

Andy Young: "Everything we stop paying now and every penny we borrow to support payments not being made will all have to be paid at some point"

Neil Robinson: "Sounds great but that doesn’t mean you won’t pay it. All it means they will defer it until this is over then add the arrears on top of your monthly payment."

Suzie Stiles: "Everything is going to create cost which will have to be clawed back eventually. Three months off paying now but how much is that going to cost all of normal bill payers in the long run?"

David King: "Even if payments get delayed, you will have to pay back one way or another."

Wayne Brigginshaw: "We need to pay, don’t forget it also goes towards funding the police."

Mand Knell: "Why? It will only be deferred and we all end up paying extra each month?"

Margaret Page: "I think if you've got money coming in you should pay. If your not working due to virus you can't pay."

Emily Barnes: "Councils elsewhere in the country are giving people their two months break now so would pay June to March instead."
