DEVIZES Liberal Democrats have written to MP Danny Kruger urging him to “end the distractions” and support calls for Dominic Cummings to go, so the government and the country can focus on the coronavirus emergency.

The Devizes MP has defended the decision by Downing Street aide Dominic Cummings to travel from London to Durham with his sick wife during the coronavirus emergency.

There have been calls for Mr Cummings to resign his position as chief aide to Boris Johnson since the trip was made public.

But Mr Kruger, who worked closely with both Mr Cummings and Boris Johnson before being elected as an MP, took to Twitter today to say: "Dom and Mary's journey was necessary and therefore within rules. What's also necessary is not attacking a man and his family for decisions taken at a time of great stress and worry, the fear of death and concern for a child. This isn't a story for the normal political shitkickery."

In the letter, Devizes Liberal Democrat spokesperson Jo Waltham, urges Danny Kruger MP to “put the interests of your constituents first, end the distractions and join the growing number of Conservative MPs who are calling for Dominic Cummings to go.”

The call comes alongside Liberal Democrat demands for an independent inquiry into the Government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis, while several Conservative MPs have also broken cover to call for Dominic Cummings to quit, amid claims he broke coronavirus lockdown rules twice.

Devizes Liberal Democrat spokesperson Jo Waltham said:

“People right across the Devizes Constituency have made incredible sacrifices to stop the coronavirus. Danny Kruger cannot be oblivious to how angry people are with this scandal.

“Each minute this scandal is allowed to drag on is another minute the Government is distracted from upscaling Britain’s testing capacity, securing PPE for frontline workers and preventing the tragic deaths in our care homes.

“Danny Kruger must stop defending the indefensible and put the health, wellbeing and economy of our country before efforts to save the Prime Minister’s adviser.”
