A VILLAGE pub has gone from serving pints to delivering them door-to-door during lockdown.

The Wonston Arms has distributed more than 1,100 fresh glasses of real ale since closing – which otherwise would have gone to waste.

Landlord Matthew Todd says the team bring a barstool with them when doing the rounds and chat to customers.

He said: "As you’ve seen in the news coronavirus has hit the pub trade hard: with news headlines questioning if pubs will reopen ever again, and an estimated 70 million pints of perfectly drinkable beer from pubs are believed to have already been destroyed.

"The moment we heard our pub had to go into lockdown we boarded up our windows and turned our little local into a real ale production line; delivering cask ales direct to the local villagers in Hampshire.

"To date we have delivered over 1,100 doorstep deliveries of fresh pints of real ale; ale that would have been destroyed otherwise. We have delivered to doorsteps since day one of lockdown, it’s been amazing.

"We take our bar stool with us and stop off for a chat with our locals; keeping that pub community spirit alive."

The pub will deliver within an eight-mile radius, covering villages like Whitchurch in the north over to Wherwell and Chilbolton in the west.

Winchester residents are also able to order.

This service has picked up interest in national media, with coverage in The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post and a German TV News crew have also filmed a delivery round.
