SWINDON Town were crowned champions of League Two after they and their fellow clubs voted to finish the 2019/20 season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision at a crunch EFL meeting on Tuesday confirmed the fourth title in Town’s 141-year history - and certainly the most unusual.

Richie Wellens’ men have not played for more than three months but will move from second to first in the final table thanks to a points-per-game system. They have been promoted to League One alongside Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle.

Here’s what Town fans commenting on our website made of the news...

‘Moonraker500’: Well done Town. Whatever the circumstances the outcome is much deserved. Looking forward to League One. This is our natural home with occasional visits above and below since the early 60s. Here’s hoping we can keep our manager and the key staff with a good squad so as to make a real effort at reaching the Championship.

‘teddownsouth1965’: Congratulations to all at STFC – especially to the players, Richie Wellens and his staff and all the staff behind the scenes who rarely get any recognition. As a STFC fan for over 60 years this is what we turn up for every game with hope in our hearts. Virus or not, it is onwards and upwards. COYR. Can’t wait for the opportunity to really celebrate at the County Ground.

‘Jimmy Quinn’: Fantastic news and richly deserved, now can we have some stability off the pitch with transparency on anything that needs addressing so we can continue moving this club forward?

‘glasred’: Excellent! Stage one completed! So deserved and full credit goes to Richie Wellens and his positive determination. Let’s hope that nothing unsavory comes out of the woodwork.

‘Monty’s Double’: We are the champions my friends! Roll on next season, season ticket already purchased.

‘TheDukeOfBanbury’: Dale Vince (Forest Green Rovers owner), you were the only one that wanted to play on. Thankfully we don’t have to visit you next season. Party time started, flag is out in the garden. Some positive news during these tough times.

‘mikek’: Well, certainly not the way we wanted to win the league but at least the season’s efforts were not wasted and we were looking great for promotion at least anyway.

Massive shame it could not be played out, especially for the fans who have simply been magnificent this season.

Going on history nothing is ever straightforward and with this legal battle going on I do worry what the future holds and this may be just calm the celebrations down a little.

If we start the season in League One and Power has departed then I might well believe we made it.

‘DEVONRED2015’: Don’t consider us champions as anything could have happened in the remaining 10 games. Can’t be champions when the season wasn’t completed.

Just glad we have got promotion and got out of this awful league, that’s enough for me.

‘Budgie10’: Still nobody asks the big question – when are we going to get the rest of our season ticket refund?

I am not in the mood for putting money in Power’s and players’ pockets when they earn a darn sight more than me.

If we have not received our goods then a refund should be law, otherwise it is daylight robbery.

If the season does not start in August will we lose all of that as well. I have also paid for next season.

People who go on a week-by-week basis are the winners and yet again the faithful have to pay the price.

‘Observer 2’: Great news! Alongside the government saying that one of the conditions for them allowing the Premier League to restart was that the income from that must be shared with the 'football family'.

Hopefully that sum will help to close any gaps in income that the lower league clubs may have suffered because of the lockdown.
