CIRENCESTER has seen many civil protests over the centuries.
Most people are acquainted with events of the Civil War, when in 1642 Lord Chando’s coach was destroyed by a mob when he attempted to execute Charles I’s Commission of Array in Cirencester.
A painting of this hangs in the Old Bingham Library in Dyer Street.
In more recent years there have been all manner of peaceful protests - political and civil.
Keep Britain Tidy was current in 1977 and Greenham Common sympathisers congregated on the steps of the magistrates court in 1983.
