A dangerous driver who drove the wrong-way down Thamesdown Drive after crashing into a Nissan put the lives of innocent members of the public at risk, police said.

Robert Kill was jailed for 15 months at Swindon Crown Court this morning for a high-speed police chase that saw him race from officers down Cricklade Road at twice the 30mph speed limit before turning onto Thamesdown Drive and striking a Nissan Qashqai.

Judge Jason Taylor QC ordered the 29-year-old serve an 18 week suspended sentence that he had been given by magistrates last year for drink driving. Read our full court report here.

Reacting to the sentence, PC Sam Young of the Swindon Community Policing Team said: "We are fortunate that nobody was seriously injured by the actions of Kill as he put the lives of innocent members of the public at serious risk.

"Despite being disqualified from driving and holding no insurance, he drove with complete disregard for his fellow road users at what was a busy time of the day.

"He drove at high speeds, for long periods on the wrong side of the road and even hit another vehicle when driving through a red light in order to evade being caught."

Shocking footage shot on another driver’s dashboard camera showed the moment Kill smashed his Ford Focus into the Nissan.

Police thanked members of the public for their help in providing statements and CCTV that helped bring the young man to justice.

Mr Young said: “If it wasn't for their support, he would still be driving on the roads now. This behaviour is unacceptable and as a police force, we will go above and beyond to secure a conviction for people who pose that much of a risk to the public."
