House of Fraser confirmed it will be closing its town centre store at the end of September.

Sally May, the assistant store manager, confirmed the news to the Advertiser and she believes the concessions at the store will also close down.

But it is not known how many jobs are at risk.

This is the second major store to announce its closure at the Brunel complex in the past week.

Last week Sainsbury’s revealed it would be closing in November, but did not give a specific date.

Here’s what you said on Facebook:

Theresa Smith: “Very sad for the staff and for the town centre. It’s a vicious circle, more that shuts less people will go to town and more will shut. Not sure what solution is.”

Lesley Lilley: “When the House of Fraser changed hands it became a jumble sale.”

Vickie Lewis: “Put the Brunel back to how it was years ago.

“Put the indoor market back with the lovely staircase opposite escalators, bring back the travelators and spiral ramp below ground, Treats, Bejams, Swiss Chalet cafe & C&A.

“And forget this whole fiasco ever happened.”

Jackie Notton: “Council should be ashamed shouldn’t let it happen why have they not regenerated town centre like Bath, Bristol or Reading.

“ Nothing to attract anyone to town just cheap chavy shops anyone with many to spend goes elsewhere

“M&S will be next & then may as well lockdown the whole town centre.”

Tim Harris: “The thing is with this, same as Debenhams, it's the sheer size of the units.

“There is nothing out there now that can take the place of such big buildings retail wise.

“The department store model is finished and has been for some time. I don’t think there is an answer for the town centre anymore there is nothing store wise worth visiting.

“It will need huge investment but I think that is unlikely.”

Jaclyn Kew: Sad news, only a few things l go into town for: one, the bank and two, House of Fraser and Primark.”

Gerry Veitch: “Very sad as they’re wonderful staff.”

Dave Vincent Grainger: “Swindon has the Outlet Centre, a great place to shop undercover and it is well maintained, clean and well secured.”

Toni Brack: “Both shops l buy my clothes from are closing. Debenhams has already closed now the House of Fraser.

“Where am l going to buy my petite clothes from? They had good petite clothing departments.”

Mary Ward: “Isn’t this where they want to build two high-rise blocks of flats?

“Perhaps that’s why they have to close.”

Vickie Lewis: “Put the canal back through and build a thriving quayside, retailers & eateries and open green spaces.

“It’s proven to work in many other towns (yes they may be cities but Swindon could compete).

“I know people who come from outer London to Swindon’s Outlet so careful planning for a heritage enhancing walkthrough would entice them to stay longer and shop more if the structure of a welcoming town and leisure area was available.”

Donald Cowie: “Questions need to ask why so many shop in Brunel are closing down.”

Tracey Hayden: “Load of tat anyway. Sorry for the staff though.”

Peter John: “I can remember when Banksy opened Dismaland in Weston a few years back.

“He could go large in Swindon I reckon.”

Debs Harding: “I moved away from Swindon 13 years ago and was so shocked to see the town centre's decline when I last visited.

“I remember 30 years ago it was a hive of activity. Shops, bars, pubs, nightclubs, cinema, college, restaurants.

“And they say we are moving forwards, I don’t think so.”

Gavin Vanstien: “Shame on the staff losing their jobs but the shop went downhill after the takeover.”

Sheila James Mitchell: That is such a shame. There won’t be anything left.”
