A barrowload of fun is what the Advertiser brought to Swindon one summer's day 31 years ago.

Shiftin' Swindon involved thousands of competitors moving around the town using all sorts of unusual transport. All sorts of groups took part, including staff from McIlroys department store, Swindon Cable TV and the Princess Margaret Hospital.

The paper's editor of the time, John Mayhew, demonstrated one method of silly transport when he posed in a wheelbarrow.

The event had a serious side, raising money for the Prospect Foundation, now known to all as Prospect Hospice.

Teams comprised five people, one of whom had to be pushed in non-motorised transport a total of three miles.

At the end of the three mile course the transported team had to be carried 100 metres supported only by copies of the newspaper.
