TWO Wiltshire pubs are taste testing a new West Country cocktail on the block.
The Wessex Negroni No.1 is a pre-bottled version of the classic Italian cocktail made for Camillo Negroni in 1919 by Fosco Scarselli in Florence.
It is being bottled at Highworth, and road tested at The Dumb Post in Calne and the Neeld Arms in Grittleton. Makers Best of Wessex say they hope to roll it out to more pubs in the near future.
Various gins from across the region, as well as local and imported vermouths were tested in a travelling laboratory that meandered its way through farmyards, and private houses late last year.
Designer and blender Giles Wareham of Best of Wessex said:
"Choosing a bottle shape was foreseen as being a major issue but by general consent it was felt that The Wessex Negroni didn’t require fancy packaging.
"As one taster explained, 'That’s so good, I would drink it from a milk bottle'.
