TORY MPS in the Gazette area have been under fire this week after all voted for what another party calls an ‘utterly reckless’ decision on the Brexit agreement.
Devizes MP Danny Kruger, Chippenham’s Michelle Donelan and North Wiltshire’s James Gray all backed Boris’s UK Internal Market Bill. The new gives the government the power to override parts of the Brexit agreement with the EU, breaking international law.
Dr Brian Mathew, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for North Wiltshire, has now written to James Gray demanding a U-turn, as his national colleagues table amendments to the Bill that would remove clauses breaching the Northern Ireland Protocol.
“At a time of national crisis, the UK government should focus on making laws, not breaking laws,” he said. “There are no two ways about it, this government is tearing up the UK’s proud history of promoting the rule of law and in the process destroying our reputation on the world stage.”
Danny Kruger defended his position, adding: “ We won’t have to use the provisions of the new bill if the EU agrees a deal that we, as an independent sovereign nation, can accept.”
