A SCHEME aimed at making Station Road more friendly for cyclists has come to an end.

Swindon Borough Council put a temporary one-way cycle lane in place in August after a receiving a £200,000 handout from the government.

It attracted criticism from Labour councillor Jim Robbins and cyclist Neil Allington, who told the Adver it made using the road "dangerous".

The two-month trial finished at the end of last week, with the signs and barriers being removed.

The council said in a Facebook post that the trial had allowed it to monitor the scheme to shape any future changes that could be made along the route.

Cabinet member responsible for the project Coun Maureen Penny said: “This particular scheme was intended as a trial to help us make sound judgements about ways to improve the road, and it has been very helpful in that respect.

“Thanks to this extra funding, we are already seeing major improvements successfully carried out at various locations across Swindon and we will continue to make the best of this opportunity.”

A similar cycle lane in Commercial Road was axed by the council after less than a week.

It sparked an outcry from traders who said they had not been consulted and it made it impossible for them to get deliveries.
