This was the scene that confronted traffic police as they caught up with a Vauxhall driver who hit 70mph through a Wiltshire market town.

Julian Drew, 31, was given a two year community order at Swindon Crown Court earlier this month after he admitted dangerous driving, possession of cocaine and other driving offences.

He led police on a high-speed chase through Calne on July 31, which only ended when he wedged his Vauxhall Zafira between a horse box and low wall in Wessington Park. There was a horse in the trailer at the time.

Drew fled through the driver’s side window but was soon caught by police. When he was cautioned he replied: “I’m sorry.” He said he’d taken cannabis and cocaine that day, with officers finding a small amount of the class A drug on him.

Prosecutor David Maunder told Swindon Crown Court last week that the police officer tailing Drew had commented that there were pedestrians and other cars in Calne at the time of the chase.

“It was plain in his view the driver attempted to evade arrest at all costs and in trying to squeeze past the horse box any pedestrian trying to use the pavement at the time would have been hit,” the barrister added.

Wiltshire Police’s roads policing unit has now released pictures of the scene that confronted them in Wessington Park. The images show Drew’s uninsured blue Vauxhall Zafira stuck fast between the garden wall and white-and-grey horse box.

PC Luke Hobbs, one of the officers involved in the chase, said: "Despite holding no licence or insurance, Drew drove without hesitation or consideration of other road user's safety and the manner of his driving placed everyone at great risk and it is only through luck that nobody was injured.

"The horse box that the car collided with was carrying a horse at the time but fortunately it was not injured but was in great distress.

"This highlights the dangers of getting behind the wheel under the influence of drugs or alcohol and we will always take a zero tolerance policy when it comes to bringing those who take such a risk to justice."
