TALKS have taken place with Wiltshire Council and other organisations to improve cycle routes between Trowbridge and Bath.

The discussions have involved cycle groups and Bath & North East Somerset Council which has already been given funds to improve routes between Bath and Bathampton.

John Potter, chairman of the Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust, said: “The government has promised £2 billion to improve walking and cycling to work.

“The mayor, Cllr Simon McNeill-Ritchie, and I are having discussions about cycling provision here in Bradford on Avon.

“We are hoping to talk to a cycling organisation about the possibilities of working with them, BANES and Wiltshire Council to improve the cycle route from Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon to Bath.”

Mr Potter, who is also a former mayor of Bradford on Avon, said they had held talks with Wiltshire Council earlier this year to make it more possible for people to commute to work by cycling.

They have been lobbying for funds to improve a cycling route along the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath from Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon to Bath.

“It would mean that there won’t be so many people in cars. We are trying to make it easier for more people to cycle to work.”

Cllr Bridget Wayman, Wiltshire Council's cabinet member for highways, said: “We’re committed to promoting cycling and walking and establishing safe cycle routes in Wiltshire.

“We would be happy to work with partners to improve the cycling route along the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath from Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon to Bath.”
