TWO people had to be rescued from the River Thames after getting into difficulty.

It is understood the first person fell into the water on Abingdon Road and the second person dived in to help them.

But when they both got ‘stuck’ all the emergency services raced to save them.

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed that they were called by the fire control room at 4.34pm on Sunday.

A spokesperson said: “We sent two ambulances to the scene. Both patients once out of the water were slightly hypothermic; one we took to the John Radcliffe Hospital for further treatment and assessment and the second patient, our ambulance crew warmed them up before discharging them fit to go home.”

Thames Valley Police said officers had been called to a ‘fear for welfare’ incident off the main road into the city at the same time.

It comes just months after Oxford hero Dale Chamberlain pulled a man out of a sinking van in the River Thames in the middle of the night to save his life.

He carried out the death-defying rescue outside his home in Grandpont in April.
