Honda has warned there could be a production delay at the Swindon plant after hold-ups at the UK's ports.

The Japanese car manufacturer told the BBC it was looking to make alternative arrangements to get the parts into the country.

The UK’s ports have been hampered by Covid restrictions while trying to deal with a surge in freight volumes.

The South Marston factory is due to close in July but the production line will be rolling until then.

Swindon Borough Council has recently been looking at alternative uses for the site and has suggested that up to 14,000 jobs could be created if the site is managed properly after Honda's departure.

Senior officer Dave Dewart said last month: “It’s 150 hectares, with 220,000 square metres of floor space with 3,500 jobs.

“Intensification of the site would allow more jobs on the site. If it was used for 100 per cent warehousing then that could be 8,000 jobs, if it was 100 per cent industrial it could be as many as 14,000 jobs.”
