EVERY area in East Lancashire has reported a drop in coronavirus infection rates, the latest figures have shown.

Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Pendle, the Ribble Valley, Hyndburn and Rossendale have all recorded reduced infection rates for the first time since before Christmas.

The highest rate can still be found in Burnley, which has a new rate of 909.8 cases per 100,000 people after 908 new cases were reported in the seven days to January 10.

Earlier this week the borough became the first place in Lancashire to report a infection rate of over 100,000.

Pendle has the second highest rate of 813.1 cases per 100,000 people, down from 825.1.

Next is Blackburn with Darwen which has also recorded a reduced rate of 714.1 cases per 100,000 cases, down from 738.2.

Hyndburn is next, also with a reduced rate of 709.5 per 100,000.

Rossendale has recorded the smallest reduction, after 399 new cases made for a new infection rate of 558.2, down from 566.6.

The Ribble Valley once again has the lowest infection rate of 548.5 cases per 100,000 people.

The figures, for the seven days to January 10, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (January 11-14) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 113 (36%) have seen a rise in case rates, 200 (63%) have seen a fall and two are unchanged.

Barking and Dagenham in London continues to have the highest rate in England, with 3,013 new cases recorded in the seven days to January 10 – the equivalent of 1,415.2 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from 1,615.3 in the seven days to January 3.

Knowsley in Merseyside has the second highest rate, up from 928.0 to 1,363.5, with 2,057 new cases.

Newham in London is in third place, down very slightly from 1,400.6 to 1,320.7, with 4,664 new cases.
