Benches have returned to the town centre of Devizes, after they were removed due to concerns over social distancing.

Last week, Wiltshire Police asked Devizes Town Council to remove picnic benches from Market Place in an attempt to stop people gathering during lockdown.

However, following discussions between the Town Council and local policing team, a decision has been made to returned the picnic benches to the Market Place.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “Following further discussions between the town council and local policing team, a decision has been made to return some of the picnic benches to the Market Place.

“These have been spaced out to encourage social distancing and we will continue to urge members of the public to remember the importance of the current national lockdown restrictions.

“The message from the Government is clear. We need to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.”

A larger area has been created with gaps between each benches in Devizes, which the town council hopes will reinforce the need for social distancing.

Currently, Wiltshire Council says there are no plans to remove benches from parks across the county but urged residents to stick to the Covid guidance.

Kate Blackburn, director for public health in Wiltshire, said: “These provide support for those with mobility issues such as the elderly or disabled who may struggle to carry out their essential journeys without them.

“We encourage anyone who needs to use a bench to maintain good hygiene practices before and after use and ensure that social distancing is adhered to at all times.”

The local authority added it is working with Wiltshire Police and other partners to make sure benches are being used safely during lockdown.

A council spokesman said: “Those sites will be individually assessed and further intervention may be necessary. However, currently we have not had to do this.”
