A parish council is calling for people to nominate local heroes who have shown tremendous kindness, consideration and selflessness within the community.

The annual Haydon Wick Heroes civic award scheme is open for nominations from those in the borough and aims to recognise a Volunteer of the year, a Young Achiever and Fabulous Fundraiser.

Chairman of the Council, Linda Brown said: "If the last eleven months have taught us anything, it is that our community has come together to support each other in a time of need. We have a wonderful, dedicated and valued group of volunteers that we are proud to work alongside. We want to take the opportunity to celebrate the positives, and to recognise those who deserve a thank-you from their community."

The winners will each receive a £25.00 voucher.

Phil Jefferies won Volunteer of the Year 2020. A spokesperson for the council said: “Phil has helped raise money for pancreatic cancer, asthma UK and has successfully set up the Seven Fields parkrun. He is a true inspiration and I think he deserves some recognition.

“Phil has worked hard over the past year to set up a second parkrun for Swindon at Seven Fields. Not only is it a great asset for the town, but the location is really important in encouraging people from perhaps less advantaged areas to join in regular exercise in a fun way.”
