A BASSETT man who headbutted a Co-op store window then struck a police officer admitted there was “no excuse” for his behaviour.

Swindon Magistrates’ Court heard police were called to reports of a disorder in Royal Wootton Bassett’s High Street on September 12 last year.

When they arrived officers spoke to Macauley Taylor, who had been out that evening with his friends.

As the officers tried to establish what had happened, the 25-year-old landscape gardener headbutted the window of the Co-op store causing the glass to crack.

Taylor then headbutted one of the officers, a PC Kilburn, as he was being walked to the police car. In a statement read to the court, the constable said he was not seeking compensation. “All I want is for Mr Taylor to understand assaulting a police officer is totally unacceptable,” he said.

The defendant was taken to Gablecross police station, where he spat over a computer at the custody desk then damaged a piece of anti-suicide clothing. He was found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis.

Taylor, of High Street, Royal Wootton Bassett, pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer, disorderly behaviour, criminal damage and possession of cannabis.

Defending, Mark Glendenning said his client had taken drugs on the night he was arrested, was feeling depressed and agitated. He had asked the police officers why they were there and, stressed, had headbutted the window.

He had shown remorse in his interview and, upon being charged, apologised to the officer.

Taylor was sentenced to an 18 month community order with 120 hours of unpaid work. He must pay £200 compensation, £85 costs and complete 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Before he left the dock, the defendant apologised for his actions: “I know that there’s no excuse for any of the behaviour.”
