HEARTFELT tributes have poured in from the people of Swindon after the news broke that the Duke of Edinburgh has died.

Steve Tann, 55, from Peatmoor said: “God bless him. He has done loads of amazing things in his life and I’m very supportive of the royal family. I am shocked and saddened to hear of his death. I knew he had been poorly and had been in hospital for a while. Rest in peace and condolences to all his family.”

An 80-year-old from Walcot said: “He was a brave man and reached a good age. It’s a shame he couldn’t reach his 100th birthday but it was touch and go when he was in the hospital. I’m a fan of the royals as I’m a war baby so I’ve grown up alongside him.”

A 78-year-old from Highworth said: “He had long innings and has done some good with things like the Duke of Edinburgh awards. Although, he has done a few controversial things and made a few awkward comments. But he has been very supportive of the Queen and married young but they loved each other.”

Jessica Lynn, 17, from Highworth said: “I didn’t know he had passed away so I’m very surprised to hear the news. I’ve heard a lot about them but I’m not heavily invested. It’s really awful.

“He was a great mental health supporter and I’ve personally had experience with that but it’s not really talked about so it’s one less person to carry that legacy on.”

Vincent Bush, 17, from Cirencester added: “I don’t follow the royals so I’m shocked to hear about it. It’s so sad because he was such a big figure. It will definitely have an impact on the royals but I can’t say how big.”

A 47-year-old from Tawhill said: “It’s sad after 73 years in service but it’s a private matter. I wonder if Harry will come back to attend the funeral and what the atmosphere is like, it’s his grandad at the end of the day so I hope he will. The royals are good for our country because they make us unique.

“I wonder if the Queen might step down as she may want some peace and quiet and let Charles step up. As one has gone, the other may go too which will be very sad.”

Sue Szulc, 67, from Pinehurst said: “It’s a shame because he has had a good life and it will affect the Queen as they have been together a long time so it may be time for her to take a back seat. It’s a shame it couldn’t have been after his birthday but at least it wasn’t from Covid.”

Jennifer Freeman, 54, from Park South said: “It’s very sad he didn’t reach 100 but he hasn’t looked well. The Queen is going to miss him as he was her righthand man. When one goes the other one sometimes does but the Queen seems to be fit and healthy but she may want to retire.”

Jeremy Layton, 58, from Pinehurst said: “It’s sad to know he has passed away as it will have a big impact on them. I just feel sorry for her but it will be tough on all of them.”

Maddy Reade, 62, from Penhill said: “It’s a sad loss and the Queen must be heartbroken. I actually watched a programme on them last night when she was young, he has stayed with her and been wonderful with her. He has always been by her side and they got together so young. What a shame he didn't reach 100 but he has had good innings.

“They have lost a family member and for anyone, it’s not nice. The country will be in mourning but I hope he has a good send-off. I’m sure the Queen will get a lot of love sent her way. I wish them my condolences.”
