Wiltshire Police has asked another force to investigate the controversial Police and Crime Commissioner election.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that it has asked Thames Valley Police to head up the external probe into matters surrounding the Wiltshire and Swindon PCC elections.

Jonathon Seed, not 24 hours before the count, withdrew his candidacy for the role after a 30-year-old drink-driving offence surfaced -- an offence he claims he disclosed.

Under the rules of the election, PCC candidates must not have been convicted of an imprisonable offence in order to be eligible to run.

Thames Valley Police have been brought in to lead the work to ensure “independent oversight” and to remove any potential conflicts of interest.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police added: “Following a request by Wiltshire Police, we have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 2021 Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner election.

“As our enquiries are ongoing we will not be making further comment at this time.”

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: “As a result of this, it would not be appropriate for us to comment any further.”

In a statement, Mr Seed has said: "As may be expected in matter like this, relating to a public election, I am informed that the police have now opened an investigation. I welcome this, and will, of course fully cooperate."
