A new pedestrian refuge island will be built on the A4 Curzon Street in Calne, slightly west of the junction of Savernake Drive. The works will start on Tuesday 1 June 1 and will be completed by Friday June 11.

The bus stop raised kerbs will also be moved and improvements will be made to some street lighting in the area.
For safety reasons the A4 will be closed to through traffic from the mini roundabout with A4 at The Square to the roundabout with A4 / A3102 Greenacres Way for the first week. The road will be closed 24 hours a day throughout the works.

Access to Savernake Drive and both entrances to the school will remain open throughout of the works and appropriate diversion signs will be in place. However, Savernake Drive will only be accessible from the direction of the town centre and people will need to follow the diversion signs in place to access the East and the A3102.

The remaining work from Sunday to Friday 11  will be carried out with 3-way traffic lights in place at the junction of Savernake Drive and A4 Curzon Street.

Sam Fox, Director of Place said, “Wiltshire Council would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience and thank people for your patience and cooperation whilst these safety improvements are made.

“Calne Community Area Transport Group (CATG) highlighted the A4, junction with Savernake Drive as an area where they would like to see safety improved. Initial investigation concluded a pedestrian refuge island would help pedestrians and bus users to cross the road on the A4 Curzon Street and make walking to and from school and town centre easier.

“Wiltshire Council is committed to improving infrastructure so that walking and cycling become a normal part of everyday life, and the natural choices for shorter journeys, such as going to school, work, travelling to the station, and for simple enjoyment.”
