A British racing driver has pleaded with his followers to support his family's restaurant near Salisbury, if they happen to be in the area.

Daniel Wells, a Hong Kong-based professional race car driver, politely asked his 9,627 Twitter followers to "pop in" at The Haven on the A30 London Road, if and when they can.

His plea comes after the eatery, owned by his family, took in just £82 in one day.

In a tweet posted on Friday night (May 14), the 29-year-old said: "Hi Twitter! Yesterday my family's restaurant took just £82 for the day's takings - all day.

"It is called the Haven, on the A30 London Road, 3 miles out of Salisbury. They do super breakfasts, amazing handstretched pizzas etc.

"If you happen to be in the area, could you please pop in, and if you have a meal please show this post and I'll buy you your drink with it!"

Mr Wells' tweet has attracted more than 13,000 likes and 7,000 retweets, with many sympathising with his family's situation after months of Covid restrictions.

Replying to some of the comments under his tweet, he said his family are not good with "branding" but the restaurant offers "good food and service".

In answer to a landlady who said her pub took in just £17 in one day and wished him luck, Mr Wells admitted that the current situation is "exceptionally tough", adding: "It's not easy sharing how bad things are. There are a lot of people suffering silently."

According to its website, The Haven is open from 8am to 4pm every day, apart from Tuesday and Wednesday.
