A much-loved postman has retired - and his village have issued a huge 'thank you' for his years of service.

On a sunny Friday, June 4, Gordon Field retired as postman to Cherhill and Yatesbury.

He has been the village postman for some 21 years and is said to be a friend to everybody in the villages. Through rain and shine, pandemic, good times and bad Gordon "has been there with a cheery word and a helping hand." Many in the community have reason to be grateful for his assistance well beyond that expected of a postman.

Gordon has been an important part of the community and will be missed greatly, the villages said.

To mark the occasion and as recognition of the affection and gratitude felt for Gordon the villages clubbed together for a farewell gift.

On the afternoon of his retirement Cherhill’s most senior resident, Dulcie Owen, represented the villages and presented Gordon with a framed photograph with an appreciative inscription and a purpose-designed greetings card including the names and goodwill messages from all who had generously donated to the collection. During the day Gordon received many other cards and gifts, not to mention posters wishing him well, as he completed his final round. It was a fitting finale to the career of a very special “postie” and friend to all.
