A NEW and inclusive youth programme aims to break down barriers in sport.

Central Swindon North Parish Council is working in partnership with Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) on the scheme which is designed to reduce the widening inequalities in sport and to remove any traditional obstacles to participation.

The parish will be running free weekly sessions to help develop social, mental and physical skills, as well as offering a respite facility for parents and carers who have children with special needs.

James Yeowell, chair of the parish community wellbeing committee, said: “It’s an excellent initiative and as a physically disabled individual myself, I know how important it is for the wellbeing of the young disabled."

“It’s absolutely vital that they are given opportunities to exercise and take part in inclusive activities, as this not only improves their fitness but also their own mental health and wellbeing as well. Our exceptional disabled youth will be given the opportunity to grow into excellent young adults, improve their confidence and be able to bond with their friends and peers.

“I look forward to seeing the programme develop and I want to thank all those involved in getting these sessions up and running.”

Helped by funding from the National Lottery, the free workshops are aimed at youngsters aged from 8-18 with SEN and physical disabilities. They will take place every term-time Thursday from June 24 at Pinetrees Community Centre.
