DRIVERS and annoyed neighbours have highlighted speeding hotspots around Swindon.

Following the Adver's report on a community speed watch team in Highworth catching motorists going well over the speed limit, readers raised concerns over similar scenes in other parts of the borough.

Gary Moss said: "Drove Road is like a race track, I've never seen a camera van here

Vicki Thomas said: "Thamesdown Drive is a nightmare. People drive up your backside if you don’t go up to 60mph when it’s a 40mph limit."

Zoe Thomas added: "I live on a busy main road and yes, speeding is a problem. You are far more likely to need hospitalisation if you are involved in an accident where one party was speeding.

"That’s the last thing the NHS needs right now. Let’s give the NHS a break and just be sensible for a while. If you need to speed, then book yourself a day on a racetrack."

Alex Clark said: "Try Cheney Manor Road some days, most do closer to 40mph."

Diana Toogood suggested that Stone Lane in Lydiard Millicent is like a rat run while Stephen Brown argued that speeding was an issue on Princes Street.

Duke of Edinburgh pub landlord Allyson Thomson claimed to have seen people drive at 60mph along a 20mph stretch of Cricklade Road in Gorse Hill.

Richard Hodder said he had clocked someone going 73mph downhill on Thames Avenue.

Others mentioned Swindon Road, Perrys Lane, Wharf Road, Marlborough Road near Coate Water.

Tracey Fricker said: "It's ridiculous from the bottom of Pinehurst road to the top. A 20 limit but [drivers] insist on 40/50mph up there at all times of the day not just at night .

"Although it's not everyone, if there was a speed camera it would help."

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “Excess speed is one of the fatal four factors that significantly increases the risk that a road traffic collision will result in serious injury or worse, a fatality.

“Exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for the weather conditions make it harder to stop a vehicle safely and reduces the driver’s reaction time.

“Our message is clear, there is never an excuse to speed.

“Wiltshire Police is well supported in tackling speeding across the county by the Community Speed Watch scheme, which returned in March this year following an enforced break due to Covid.

“With more than 1,000 volunteers across the county the scheme makes a valuable contribution in raising awareness and educating on the danger of speeding.

“They are supported by the recently appointed traffic enforcement officer, as well as new camera equipment, to collate the intel to develop a targeted enforcement approach across the community areas.
