PLANS for a 62-bed care home in Warminster are being strongly opposed by town councillors.

Angel Care plc, of Harrow in Greater London, wants to build a two-storey home on land north of Grovelands Way.

The councillors voiced their concerns at a meeting of their planning advisory committee on Monday, June 14.

Although accepting the need for more care homes in the area, they were not happy with the company's planning application, which is due to be decided by Wiltshire Council on Thursday, July 15.

Cllr Phil Keeble proposed they object on the grounds that there is a significant difference from the company’s initial application.

He says these differences are such that a new application should be made.

Cllr Keeble said: “There is a significant increase in rooms, therefore there is an increased amount of related traffic to an already, overly congested small local road.

“No additional parking is provided from the initial 48-bed to the now proposed 62 bedrooms.

“The principle of this being a care and retirement community seems to have been omitted from this application.

“There is no provision for the pharmacy and medical centre, despite the increase in bedrooms.”

The Environment Agency has also objected because the land lies in a flood zone. It says that Angel Care plc's flood risk assessment does not comply with requirements and does not adequately assess the flood risks.

There are also concerns about flood water run-off into nearby streams that are tributaries to the adjoining rivers due to the potential impact on the local ecology.

Cllr Keeble added: “Flood risk zone 3b states only essential infrastructure and water compatible uses are permitted in the zone."

Cllr Stacie Allensby seconded the objections, which were unanimously approved by the committee members.
