Some of Swindon's best known-and-loved buildings as well as some hidden gems will be open for unprecedented access this weekend as part of Heritage Open Days.

Much of the activity will be based in the Railway Village where residents will be able to immerse themselves in the social and communal aspects of life for GWR workers and their families by visiting the Carriage Works, the Health Hydro, the Railway Village Museum, the Central Community Centre (formerly GWR Hospital), the Baker’s, the Gluepot pub, St Mark’s Church and the Pattern Church.

Lesser known attractions include St Mary’s Church and the Walled Garden at Lydiard Park and House, The Friends Meeting House at Eastcott and Prospect Place in Old Town.

Entry is free and there will be activities such as guided tours, expert tours, activities for children and historic photo and art exhibitions.

Robert Jandy, the council's cabinet member for culture and heritage, Leisure and Town Centre Experience said: “These Heritage Open Days are a great opportunity for residents to feel closer to Swindon and its history.

“I highly encourage people to take part where possible and to see why their town’s history is so important to who we are today and how it continues to influence who we are.”
