A YEAR-LONG reading campaign in schools, libraries and communities has been launched to encourage people of all ages to pick up a book.

Beginning on September 27, Wiltshire Council is inviting all schools in the county to sign up to a reading awards scheme that enhances reading through a series of achievements to tick off.

The scheme is different for primary and secondary and will feature a range of milestones to reach bronze, silver and gold.

Deputy council leader and cabinet member for education and skills, Laura Mayes said: “Reading is essential to everyday life and can open so many doors to learning. It gives us fresh ideas, helps us to understand the world in which we live and supports our mental health and relationships.”

Libraries will be hosting events throughout the year including author talks, books festivals, a Harry Potter night and promoting the benefits of joining a library.

The council is also asking school and the public to help create a list of the top 100 books in Wiltshire.
