Swindon was the second most generous place in the country this year when it came to recycling textiles for firefighters.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service's fire station on Drove Road collected more than 30 tonnes of recycling for the Fire Fighters Charity - just two tonnes less than Egremont's station in Cumbria.

Firefighters have received a certificate of commendation and they hope to bag the top spot next year.

Area manager Marc House said: “Textile recycling is an essential part of the income needed by the Fire Fighters Charity to deliver its services to everyone who works within the fire and rescue sector – help which ranges from mental health services to career-saving physiotherapy to financial and practical support.

"With no Government funding, the Charity needs to raise at least £10 million annually, and all fire stations do what they can to achieve this.”

The Fire Fighters Charity enhances the quality of life for serving and retired firefighters.

Swindon's station also raises money for the charity by doing car washes and providing parking when Swindon Town FC plays at home.
