Battersea Power Station in London may no longer be at risk - but Swindon's Mechanic's Institute still very much is.
Historic England, which has its headquarters in Swindon has issued its annual Heritage at Risk list – documenting buildings, monuments and sites which are in danger of being destroyed or lost.
And while the famous towers of the South London power station are no longer endangered, being removed from the list 30 years after being added, the same cannot be said for the late Victorian Mechanics' Institute building in Emlyn Square.
The list says of the Grade II-listed structure which is behind boards and in a very poor state of repair: "The shell of the building has been stabilised but it is not possible to enter due to health and safety concerns. The Railway Village, of which the Mechanics' forms the centrepiece, is now a Historic England Heritage Action Zone. An options appraisal for the future use of the building has now been completed and a project to restore the building is in its early stages."
The building is privately owned but Swindon Borough Council is working to try and return control of it to public authorities.
