THE MAYOR of Chippenham has signed a covenant to commit the town to EU climate and energy objectives.

On November 12, town mayor, Cllr John Scragg signed the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy after it was agreed to by councillors at an October meeting.

The covenant was launched in 2008 to gather local governments across the continent to voluntarily pledge to achieve and exceed EU climate and energy targets.

“I am delighted to have signed the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy on behalf of Chippenham Town Council, to join with many other communities in the UK and abroad in committing to the prioritisation of measures to achieve carbon neutrality,” Cllr Scragg said.

Chippenham Town Council told the LDR: “The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is the largest global alliance for city climate leadership across the globe.

"We will take this opportunity to share information, work collaboratively to support the work of our Climate Emergence Advisory Group in lessening our environmental impact.”
