SWINDON School of Gymnastics’ senior squad was crowned League Two B Champions after a fantastic team performance at the West Country League Championships in Melksham last week.

Up against clubs from Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Dorset in the final round of the year, the six-strong senior team shone in the multi-event format as each member more than played their part in a competition where the top four scores in each team counted in the final tally.

Shannon was the team’s highest overall scorer, Mimi stayed on the beam, Demi received the top score in the floor event, Daisy and Shannon completed new vaults and were rewarded for their difficulty, Jess’s clean bar routine earned her a great mark, and Hetty was consistent throughout.

Despite the competition being an exceptionally close affair, the various squads conducted themselves in a polite and friendly manner throughout, and in the end it was SSG who were crowned champions.

Coach Lauren Cordingley said: “It was so nice to be back out there competing after such a long time out.

“These young ladies are a credit to the town, not only do they work incredibly hard during their training, but have transitioned to to the senior rankings very well.”

Meanwhile, the junior squad claimed a silver medal in their competition. The juniors had a much later start in the day and also performed against clubs from Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset.

Lowri was the team’s highest overall scorer and did a fantastic beam routine, earning her an impressive score. Lowri was the only gymnast to be awarded the split jump bonus.

Millicent performed admirably on bars, Talia did really well on the floor, Anne did an impressive vault, and Scarlett and Mollie were really consistent throughout.

The junior team was extremely excited to stand on the podium to claim their medals.
