An campaign to encourage people to be mindful of the rubbish they generate held its second annual litter pick across Swindon. 

Groups of people from communities all over the town picked up their grabbers and bin bags and descended on the streets and parks in their area with one goal in mind - to keep Swindon tidy. 

Picking sessions were organised in litter hot-spots like Coate Water, Mannington Recreation Ground, Penhill and the town centre, filling up bags and bags of rubbish including alcohol bottles, crisp packets and even a pair of trousers.

Although some were rained off because of poor weather on Saturday, and others were postponed or closed to the public due to Covid concerns, many members of the public and parish councillors gathered to do their bit.

Ben Bell, the central coordinator for the Plastic Free group, said: “Many thanks to the awesome people and organisations who have contributed to Keep Swindon Tidy Day this year.” 

“We have helped to brighten up Swindon and make it a healthier place.

“Such positive actions play a part in creating and nurturing a culture of care and respect for each other and the environment. A good start to the year!”

“Many thanks to the parish councils who supported this day and have been actively supporting our campaign throughout - Central North, Central South, Haydon Wick, Highworth, West Swindon, Wroughton. 

“Many councillors were out on litter picks setting the example.
