Work on a bridge to the north of Highworth is set to be extended after its condition was discovered to be worse than anticipated.

Hannington Parish Council has publicly confirmed the bridge at Hannington Wick would be closed for longer than expected via an update they'd received from Swindon Borough Council.

The bridge is part of an often-used unclassified road linking Hannington and Kempsford.

The update from the council said: "This is not a situation that could have been predicted with any certainty prior to commencement of the scheme.

"Indeed, it has taken up until today to effect repairs to the concrete and apply the essential waterproofing membrane to the bridge deck.

"The next stage in the process will be to reinstate the carriageway, and this will commence on Monday 17th January.

As a result of the above, a further extension to the road closure period is required"

It is now believed the road will be re-opened to through traffic by January 28.
