PILES of rubbish continue to blight the abandoned Oasis Leisure Centre site.

A group of councillors and members of the public went to clean up the Oasis and surrounding car park, filling more than 20 black bin bags.

It led to more anger at landlord SevenCapital, which had promised to keep the area tidy.

But SevenCapital says the people of Swindon are responsible for dropping the litter at such a rate - and for campaigning to get the dome listed.

“We are constantly tidying up but unfortunately the rate of litter dropping over such a vast area, it’s a never-ending task," a spokesman said.

“In addition, the listing has added further cost constraints on the future viability and deliverability of the Oasis, which had this not occurred we would likely have been on site now bringing it back into life with the activity that you would expect from a construction site which would have alleviated the problem.”

This Is Wiltshire:

Councillor Will Stone, who organised the activity, said: "We were deeply saddened to see what has become of such a well loved community asset.

"The bulk of the litter was fast food containers, plastic bottles and crisp packets."It is upsetting that Swindon Borough Council has failed to hold SevenCapital accountable for looking after the area. We are urging them to put pressure on SevenCapital to keep the sight in good order going forward."
