THIS young lad has impressed boxing judges with his skills in the ring.

Frankie Osbourne won the Amateur Boxing Alliance Schools National School Championship Finals at Cricklade Leisure Centre on Sunday afternoon.

He went three rounds against a London opponent before the judges unanimously decided that he should be the victor.

The youngster has been training at Swindon Brunel Amateur Boxing Club for two years and taking part in small bouts for the last few months.

He told the Adver: “It was a tough and difficult fight but I was pretty confident and wasn’t nervous. You’ve just got to put all your effort in, not getting hit is the hardest thing.

“I was happy when I won and it was nice having my friends there watching. I want to do this as a career.”

Frankie’s little brother Troy has joined the club recently. Their dad Oz Osbourne says the club has helped them make friends and have fun safely after school.

Oz said: “I’m glad he’s doing something like this with his free time instead of me worrying that he’s hanging around on street corners. He spends more time at this club than anywhere else, it’s his life, he loves it.

“I’m really proud, the final was brilliant, one of the best days of my life. A lot of people came to watch Frankie fight – his sponsor SAS Rope and Rail, other club members, friends from school.

“I used to train at the gym when he was a baby and he would crawl around there, then started hitting a bag when he could walk, so he’s been around boxing all his life.

“I never pushed him into it’s just what he wants to do and it’s all he thinks about.”

Brian Roberts runs the boxing club, which is based above Iceland in the town centre and has around members aged six to 76.

He said: “Frankie’s a wonderful lad, we were elated for him because he has really worked hard, he’s a regular in the gym.

“I think Frankie’s got a future, he has an edge above others, perhaps it’s in the blood as his dad used to compete.

“He’s dedicated and very humble but springs into life in the ring. He’s got so much to learn but he operates so well.”
