A Swindon Town legend has raised almost £10,000 for the NSPCC by regaling fans with tales of his time playing for the club.

Former left-back Phil King took part in a fan question and answer event at the County Ground and more than 150 people attended the event to hear him talking about playing for the club.

King made more than 100 appearances for Town between 1987-89 and returned to the Wiltshire side for a brief second spell at the County Ground in 1997.

Organiser Aimee Metcalfe said she was blown away by the amount raised by the event earlier this month.

She said: “The event went incredibly well, we are still on cloud nine about how great the night was and we are overwhelmed by the amount raised by everyone who was generous enough to donate.

“Originally, we had a target of around £4,000 in mind in the run up to the event, so to hit almost £10,000 is absolutely incredible! We thank every single person that dug deep and help to raise such a wonderful amount for such an important charity.

“It was heart-warming to see everyone enjoying themselves. It’s been a while since a lot of people have been to an event like this again, so to see everyone smiling and laughing was great.

“We have had so many people tell how they found the evening with Phil one of the best they have attended, and I believe that’s because it’s been such a long time since we’ve all been able to enjoy ourselves like that, it made it all the more pleasing.

The NSPCC provides a variety of services to children and young people in Wiltshire, including Childline.

Childline is a free and anonymous helpline for children to call when they have worries or concerns and each call costs £4.

NSPCC community fundraising manager for Wiltshire Emma Hildesley said: “It was great to see football fans enjoying themselves in aid of the NSPCC.

“The event was really fun and they’ve raised an amazing amount of money that could be used to answer almost 250 phone calls to Childline.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Phil, Swindon Town, Aimee and Kev from Verelogic and everyone else involved to help bring this event to life.

“This event has “kick-started” our Swindon Branch Volunteer Committee’s 125th anniversary appeal which is running for the next year, and what a way to get it off the ground.”
