A GLAMOROUS charity ball raised thousands of pounds for good causes in Swindon.

Rotary club members, business bigwigs and guests of honour gathered at the Marriott hotel on Saturday night for a fundraising gala with 1920s-themed entertainment.

Guests enjoyed a three course meal while watching the Flaming Feathers and a live band. This is the first time the ball has been held since 2019.

Sam Pearce, who raised more than £3,000 for the Swindon Down's Syndrome Group, presented a cheque to a representative from the charity, Cliff Puffett, then learned that Swindon Town sponsor Imagine Cruising will take the 30-year-old on a cruise with his family around the British Isles in September.

A raffle, envelope draw, silent auction and live auction sold off an impressive array of prizes, including a Ronaldo signed replica shirt, a bottle of Haig Club bottle of Malt Whisky, a stay in London and tour of the House of Commons, trips to Amsterdam, Paris, Brussells and Munich, a framed and signed Glen Hoddle and Lou Macari shirts, and a VIP experience at Swindon Town Football Club.

A lucky draw saw people pay £20 each for a chance to win a diamond ring worth more than £4,600 which had been donated by jeweller Richard Deacon of Deacon's in Old Town.

An extraordinary coincidence saw the winning number match the one on Mr Deacon's ticket, so as a compromise, he raffled off the rare finger ornament with bids starting at £3,000.

Money raised during the evening will go to four beneficiaries: Swindon 105.5, the Swindon Advocacy Movement, Wiltshire Search and Rescue, and the Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service.

Since the fundraising ball began in 1989, guests have raised more than £1 million.
