A man has been banned from the roads for 15 months after pleading guilty to drug-driving and driving without insurance.

Micah Gray, 27, from London, was caught driving under the influence of cannabis earlier this year in Swindon.

On April 30, officers stopped Gray on Volta Road.

He provided a specimen which was positive for cannabis, and he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and driving without insurance.

On September 21, Gray pleaded guilty to the offences at a hearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.

He has been disqualified from driving for 15 months, as well as being fined £350, and required to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £35.

It’s illegal to drive if either:

  • you’re unfit to do so because you’re on legal or illegal drugs
  • you have certain levels of illegal drugs in your blood (even if they have not affected your driving)

If you’re convicted of drug driving you’ll get: a minimum of a one-year driving ban. an unlimited fine, up to 6 months in prison and/or a criminal record.

Crimestoppers have noticed an increase in drug driving, with cases rising from 5,028 between April 2018 and March 2019 to 10,580 between April 2020 and March 2021.
