Highworth residents were left shocked on Sunday after water started gushing from the road.

The Roundhills Mead which provides motorists with a backway around the town centre was briefly flooded.

In a video sent in by resident Michael Stierer, a huge gush of water could be seen escaping the drain covers.

He said this was because the drain covers were damaged previously, which resulted in rivers and large amounts of standing water developing at times.

Michael said: “Roundhills Mead has a history of a drain cover popping up over the years, sometimes causing damage to vehicles that accidentally drive over it.

“The problem is usually solved by putting temporary lights on the mead to stop drivers going over the cover.

“There was a so-called repair by the council earlier in the year that didn’t rectify the problem.

"In the last three weeks another attempt has been made with the road closed in both directions for this major repair, where I think another drain was added to solve the issue."

The 65-year-old added that he was frustrated by Thames Water’s failure to fix the drain cover, as heavy rain causes the issue.

“This has caused serious delays for drivers as most of the traffic had to use the Swindon road.

“I’ve lived in Highworth for the last one and a half years and there have been temporary lights on Roundhills Mead seven or eight times in that period because of the drain issue.

“It’s been hard to understand why the issue cannot be resolved, I thought that this last three-week closure was the final chapter but appears not!”

Swindon Borough Council and Thames Water have been approached for comment.
