WORK to install crash barriers along Great Western Way between Mannington and Blagrove roundabouts is set to begin soon.

Construction, due to last two months from February, will include a central reservation barrier, improvements to the existing nearside barriers and relocation of traffic signs, traffic signal poles and street lighting columns further back from the edge of the carriageway.

But it means traffic restrictions will be put in place for the duration of the project.

It was decided the work should go ahead after road safety officers reviewed the need for crash barriers to prevent any potential collisions.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: "We have already extended the 40mph limit at Blagrove Roundabout beyond the traffic lights by the Volvo garage.

"In order to maintain the safety of the workforce, and of road users, the project will require lane closures and a 30mph speed limit to be in place on this section of Great Western Way throughout the period of the work."

The project is funded through the Local Transport Plan programme.
