A van driver who almost had a head-on crash has been arrested after testing positive for cocaine.
The driver committed multiple offences, including the near-miss crash, on February 13, and was observed by an off-duty trainee police officer who was on their way to work and couldn't ignore what they were seeing.
After calling for assistance, the new roads policing unit officer pulled the van over and gave the driver a roadside drug wipe which came back as positive for both the class A drug cocaine.
Wiltshire Police has launched an ongoing campaign to tackle what it calls the fatal five - the five things most likely to lead to a crash that takes someone's life - and drug driving is one of them.
The others are excessive speed, drink driving, using a mobile phone, and not wearing a seatbelt
The incident was posted on the Witls Specialist Ops Twitter page.
In the post a spokesperson for the force said: "Never off duty!
"Arrested by an off-duty trainee #RPU officer, who called for assistance on his way into work tonight, who witnessed the van driver commit multiple offences & have a near head-on RTC!!
"That's 'Get an arrest pre-shift signed off."
