The Royal International Air Tattoo started today (Friday 14) at RAF Fairford where thousands descended upon the airbase to see over 250 aircraft take part in either the flying or static displays.

This year’s event will see the UK debut of the new Gripen E jet and RAF’s F-35B Lightning now included in the flying programme on all three days of the show.

Paul Atherton, chief executive officer for Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, said: “This year’s show is set to be another thrilling event, with all types of aircraft demonstrating their capabilities in the sky."

But among all the aviation excitement, there may be a famous face or two.

Famous faces we might see at this year's RIAT:

The Prince and Princess of Wales - This one isn't a 'might'. The rain didn't deter the Prince and Princess of Wales who treated their children to a day of jets, helicopters and historic planes as they enjoyed a family day out today.

Prince George and his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, toured RAF Fairford with their parents as their school holidays began in earnest.

Carol Vorderman - The famous Countdown presenter appeared last year to enjoy the exciting displays at the military airshow.

A keen flyer, she regularly attends the military airshow.

Tim Peake - One of the most famous astronauts in the world, Tim Peake joined Carol last year as he took to the skies in a Gazelle helicopter, flying around the RIAT site.

He is preparing to feature at this year's Royal International Air Tattoo as part of the event's Inspire Stage.

Tom Cruise - Mr Hollywood made a shock appearance at last year's show to promote the latest TopGun film, so it wouldn't be a shock if he made an appearance due to another blockbuster set to be released...

Oh yes, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I. The latest chapter in the Mission Impossible franchise was partly filmed in the UK, and Cruise himself is well known for his love for aviation.
