SWINDON Town have sold striker Jacob Wakeling to League One Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee in a shock late transfer deadline move.

The striker has signed a three-year contract with Darren Ferguson's men, departing the County Ground inside the final hour of the summer window.

Following a successful trial period with the club, Wakeling initially signed a one-year deal with Swindon in July 2022.

But after netting four goals and providing three assists in his first 10 matches, the forward penned a four-year extension.

The 21-year-old failed to score in four appearances this term, but he leaves Town having notched eight in total along with six assists in 50 appearances.

Speaking to Peterborough United's media team after signing, Wakeling revealed how he was already on the coach to Doncaster with Swindon when the deal kicked into gear.

He said: “When I first heard of the interest, it was something I wanted to get done quickly.

"It has been a bit of a mad day as I was on the way to a coach stop off point with Swindon, but then the plans changed!

"I am really excited to be here. It is a wonderful club to continue my development with.

“Working with the manager was a massive appeal, but also the way the club plays, I saw that first hand earlier in the season in the Carabao Cup.

"There are a lot of good players here, and I can’t wait to get here and meet them and get on the training pitch and show what I can do.”

In Town's farewell statement, the club thanked Wakeling "for all his efforts during his time" with the club and "wish him all the very best for the future."

Meanwhile, Wakeling's new manager, Ferguson said: “We have been keeping an eye on Jacob since last season when he had a bit of a breakout campaign.

"He scored eight goals at Swindon and impressed. I have spoken to people I know who have worked with him and they have given a glowing recommendation.

“He is a real pest in the way that he presses. He is a strong runner, a good size, he can play wide but he is predominantly someone who plays down the middle.

"We have done our research methodically for all of the players we have brought in during this window.

“We think he is a really good young player, we are excited about him, we feel he has a lot of potential and I am looking forward to working with him.”
