Swindon Harriers secured four league titles in the final race of the Oxfordshire Cross Country League in a weekend full of silverware.

The men’s A team retained their title for a fourth successive year in the final race of Bryan Clinton being the team manager, as well as the under-13 girls’ team also taking home the division title.

There were also league wins and promotions to the top tier for the men’s B team and senior women’s team as the Harriers enjoyed a successful weekend across a number of teams.

Clinton reflected on the title, saying: “It has been brilliant. This is the fourth year in a row that we have won the senior men’s team title and I believe it is two in a row for Simon and his third individual title in four years.

“And some people have told me that no club has ever won both divisions with their A and B men’s teams before so that could be a first as well.

“And I’m particularly pleased to see the women get back into the top division having dropped down to division three, something that should never have happened but it did.

“Other challenges are coming up and, of course, we are always looking to test ourselves at a higher level – but for now we’ll just enjoy the glory for a while!”

There were also plenty of individual accolades for runners, with Simon Byrne finishing second at Henley-on-Thames to keep hold of his individual crown.

Finley Byrne was desperately close to making it a family double, but after a season-long tussle with his Bicester rival, he came home with a very respectable second place overall in the under-13s.

Chloe Powell also ended up on the podium, moving into third in the overall standings in the final race of the season, and Ellie Charlesworth and Freya McMeeking finished second and third in the under-13 girls' standings.

Simon Byrne said of his win: “The overall title was signed, sealed and job done before today’s race was even run so there was no real pressure on me and I was just happy to give it a decent run-out to finish.

“I couldn’t ask for any more than to win it again and I really enjoyed racing the league. I guess I’ll be back next season and try and make it a hat-trick.

“Finley is disappointed not to have won but he’ll be back for sure.”
