Travellers remain locked into an abandoned park and ride site on Swindon's outskirts.

At least three caravans and a car parked up at the disused land on Pipers Way in late May and their owners secured the site in a way that prevents Swindon Borough Council from entering it.

On Wednesday, May 29, the council explained that the new arrivals did not have permission to be on the gated site and that a Section 78 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 order is being sought which will allow the group and their vehicles to be removed from that land.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman told the Adver on Thursday that the local authority is currently waiting for a slot at court for the order to be issued.

The council previously took action to remove travellers who set up camp on the same spot in August 2022.

The £2m Wroughton Park and Ride opened in April 2002 with  640 car parking spaces, but closed in 2007 due to poor demand.

Hopes to bring it back into use for the Wichelstowe development have not materialised, though it was used as a test and trace centre during the coronavirus pandemic.
