SWINDON Town's Checkatrade Trophy exit was confirmed this evening after Newport County defeated Plymouth Argyle in south Wales.

First half goals for Antoine Semenyo and Mark Harris secured County a two-goal win against Derek Adams' men, ensuring Newport ended their three-game group stage campaign level on points with Town and Chelsea U21s.

Though Town defeated Newport in mid-September, a 4-0 loss against Chelsea's youth team meant Swindon ended their group stage matches with a level goal difference.

Newport meanwhile conceded just once to record a goal difference of plus four, meaning they advance to the competition's knockout phase with Chelsea U21s - who topped Southern Group C.

It means new Town manager Richie Wellens has just League Two and Town's FA Cup campaign to focus on having landed the SN1 hotseat this week following Phil Brown's departure.
