SWINDON Supermarine manager Lee Spalding is looking for his side to achieve only their second clean sheet of the season in tonight’s Southern League Premier Division South game against Frome Town, writes JONATHAN LEIGHFIELD.

Marine’s only previous shut-out was all the way back in August when they beat the Met Police 2-0. Since then, Spalding’s men have gone 11 league games in a row without repeating the feat.

They now sit in 20th position with 12 points from their opening 14 games, having shipped 24 goals in that time.

The Marine manager says they will travel to fellow strugglers Frome with the primary intention of ending that poor defensive run.

“It’s important that, if we get opportunities, we score, and we make sure we defend properly to get a clean sheet. We’ve only had one clean sheet all season in the league, which isn’t good enough," said Spalding.

“First and foremost, we’ve got to make sure we keep clean sheets. That will be our goal – to make sure we come away with a clean sheet.

“I think we’ve got the quality going forward to score goals, but the front players have got to take responsibility for squandering chances, so they need to make sure they’re more clinical in front of goal as well because that will help us get results."

Marine blew a one goal lead at home to Harrow Borough at the weekend to slip to their fourth defeat in a row, but Spalding insists the immediacy of their next league fixture down in Somerset is a positive and can help his side get back to winning ways.

“I don’t think there’s anything better than playing again straight away," said Spalding.

“Ultimately, you’re looking for a reaction off the players and I’m really hoping we go there and give a really good account of ourselves and we need to make sure we try and get something out of the game.

“They are a good side, but they’re at the wrong end of the league with us at the moment.”

Meanwhile, in the Hellenic League Premier Division, third-placed Royal Wootton Bassett Town are at home to Bishops Cleeve.
